Broken Bike Wheel Originally uploaded by g-monkey
An update to this story, officials are now being asked to address the shoulders of Highway 1. It is now assumed that the unpaved shoulders (which are mostly just gravel) may have played a role in the accident. With such bad shoulders, cyclists are forced to use the highway road themselves along with normal highway traffic.
No charges have been laid yet. The 27 year old male driving the Honda Civic has been identified but his name isn’t being released.
“The driver from Virden, we know where he is and who he is, so we can do that at a later time, once we have all the facts gathered.” - RCMP spokeswoman Sgt. Line Karpish

Broken Bike Wheel Originally uploaded by g-monkey
Several people, cycling for Ride of a Lifetime, were hit by a Honda Civic yesterday near Virden, Manitoba. Just 300 kilometers west of Winnipeg. The 45 and 50 year old male lost their lives while a 19 year old male and 16 year old girl were taken to a hospital. The young man and woman survived, and she is currently in Brandon recovering. They were the son and daughter of the 50 year old man.
Ride of a Lifetime is a fundraiser for The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The trip started out in Vancouver, BC. and was set to end in St. John’s, N.L. Our hearts go out to the families involved and I hope this accident doesn’t discourage other bikers who believe in the cause. Though, I’m sure it won’t be easy for the team to recover over such a loss. I’ll be sure to let you know If we get any updates.

HBC Run for Canada 2K5 (10K) Originally uploaded by klwatts
Not much of a drinker? Well, HBC is holding another 10K run this year on Canada Day starting at Assiniboine Park.
The 10K Run starts at Perimeter Drive near the Lyric Theatre, and follows Perimeter Drive Southeast, then towards the beautiful Formal Garden. It continues out to the corner of Corydon Avenue and Park Boulevard, turning down Park Boulevard to Wellington Crescent. Be sure to keep your eyes on the prize and not the beautiful houses (or the canker worms trying to land on your face). Runners will then head east on Wellington Crescent to Guelph Street, looping back west along Wellington Crescent to the finish line in Assiniboine Park. The route is certified and sanctioned, and is wheelchair accessible.
You can register for the event here. Cost is $43 but you get a free Runnning Room T-shirt and a commemorative medal.
Check out their site to get more details.
