IMPRESSIONS: DTP Winnipeg’s Best Dance Crew 2008

Written By Stacey

DTP 2008 – Winnipeg’s Best Dance Crew Originally uploaded by AccessWinnipeg

It was awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome. Did I mention it was awesome? The show completely surpassed my expectations.

Sikat has been crowned Winnipeg’s best Dance Crew. They will be opening for Jabbawockeez July 21st!

The dancing was strong and the choreography was amazing. Sikat was on the same level as the Jabbawockeez and you could tell the moment they got up on stage. Dummy Squad, the runner ups, had some very unique choreography but just were not as tight as Sikat. Synergy, seemed to fall behind when presented with the challenge of creating a routine in a couple of hours, but man can some of those kids dance. How old are they anyways? I swear I could be their mothers! Their first routine was the best one of the night in my opinion.

One thing the show really lacked was more dance crews. Come on, I know there are more dance crews in Winnipeg!

Dummy Squad was my favourite of the night, pulled some really nice routines. But all crews really brought something to the table so it was a nice show. The finals was really heated though, not sure if it was both Sikat’s and DS’ first time doing a battle like that, but it got messy and didn’t look like there was enough respect from either crew to give room and let the other crew do their thing.

If you’re impressed with these guys, wait until you see the Jabbawockeez show. Another local bboy crew Dangerous Goods is doing a showcase as well and they’re S-I-C-K. They performed at a Sikat social some time last year… or was it two years ago.. anyway, they absolutely killed it.

Sikat was good and definitely owned the stage in the finals, but to say they are on the same level as Jabbawockeez is a huge statement…. IMO.

Dangerous Goods is dope, I seen them perform at the U of M one time I think, same with Define Movement, I don’t know if they’re still around but they were pretty sick to.

It looked like the stage was too small for 2 cru’s to be battling (especially (tom) cru’s that size. Props to all of them anyway…frieken’ awesome!!!

imho, sikat deserved the win. Its supposed to be a full on DANCE crew battle, not a taunting battle. Sikat prepared themselves for the finals and had sick routines. DS had sick routines before the finals but when it came to the finals all they had was taunts. And dont think im one of those pro-sikat biased fans im just a fan of dancing. hell if you heard it, it was me and calvin honking the horns in the zucru display for DS lol.

Now all the crews know what it takes to win, next year’s competition should be badass.

Finally I can comment! I had to resign for a new account LOL

I went to DTP on Saturday but left before WBDC.I don’t think people realize… but this is probably the first “hip hop” dance battle thats happened since the boom in hip hop crews in the city, and it really didn’t help that these two crews have an awkward history with each other. Anyways.. what I’m trying to say is that.. the lack of experience and respect shows here… regardless if they did have “weirdness” between the groups they should have let each other ACTUALLY dance (Go DS Dude at 1:57! siiiick) In the end I agree with keeborts… Sikat was much more prepared with material so in that they deserved to win. But if I was there I still would have cheered for DS =P

@ VinDiesel…. yes Define Movement is still active. Dammecia the director was one of the judges at the comp.
    @ m.solano… WORD.

@Ken, those two kids are brothers, JL and MJ, ever since they were babies they can dance and trust me i’ve known them since they were like 5 years old. haha yah the ironman bit was pretty sick, i was actually expecting a jabbawockeez tribute or something from any or all the crews lol.
    ——————-
@everyone hating on the statement of Sikat being on the same level as Jabbawockeez,
to defend the person who posted these pictures and video (and she also happens to be a senior editor of accesswinnipeg.com). i THINK she meant performance level, their heads were in the game and u can tell they were PREPARED (which u can see during the finals), just like the jabbawockeez during all their performances on america’s best dance crew.

wow whatsup with all the anger/hating?!? everyone buy a slurpee and chill (and help Winnipeg take back our title as Slurpee Capital of the World) :D

If they dance…. They dance…. – the skewed version of Ivan Drago.

All teams rocked hard, and I like to see that. Competition is what makes people shine, and brings out the best in themselves. Sadly I wasn’t able to make the show, and I was hoping to read a blog that states someones “Impressions”, hoping that it would a rough synopsis of the night, and the event as a whole. However, the only impression I got from this blog was that it was “awesome” and I had to fend for myself, and gather my own impressions, by watching and observing the talented work of the videographer and the photographer. I could only grasp strange comparisons, and the mindset of someone trying to judge the crews, from roughly two paragraphs of Blog.

It’s really exciting to see that Winnipeg is starting to get into our dance scene!! DTP & Bundown did a great job putting this competition together, most of all because it created a neutral playing field for all teams to come and compete without worrying about biased judges and such.

I would first like to give a shout out and props to all the teams that participated that night and it was great to see everyone bring their “A” game!!! The competition was definitely tough and brought the best out of each team.

My hat goes off to Dummy Squad for their stellar performances all night, and they made it so tough that it could have gone either way. Fortunately for us we won this one, but I’m sure there will be many more to come…

Regarding the comment which compared Sikat to the JabbaWocKeez, we are extremely flattered by that comment and understand what the writer meant when she wrote it. It was a nice comment but we (Sikat) are not even in the same league as the first season ABDC champs! We have a tremendous amount of respect for the JabbaWocKeez and we also have an understanding of the caliber of their skills, and at this point in time we aren’t there yet. Not yet. So no one needs to go all crazy about that comment cause we know we’re not the JabbaWocKeez!!! Can’t wait to open the show for them though!!!

Again, it’s really cool to see the city start to take notice, and it’s inspiring to see people start to grow an appreciation for what we do! So with that being said, our hip hop dance community is on the rise and I can guarantee there will be more to come! Thank you once again to DTP & Bundown for hosting this event, and thank you Winnipeg for all the support!!! Till next time…

Thanks for uploading these videos. They’re all great dancers. Sikat deserved the win, I agree, because in the end for the battle mania, they worked as a team, and most of their delivered moves were as a team, not just one person out in the battle field. Props to DS for great performance too. Winnipeg’s finest dancers indeed :)
