Strikes are ‘IN’ for 2008
SuperStore Sunset Originally uploaded by calix
Westfair Food employees in Manitoba, members of the union, Local 832 of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), are prepared to go on strike on October 1st if they can’t come to an agreement for a new contract which expires September 30th.
I wonder what these guys are striking about. I will never work for a place that requires me to work under a union. You go in to a job knowing what you will get paid and what you will work, so if you don’t like it…LEAVE AND LET SOMEONE ELSE WORK THE JOB. /rant

I don’t agree with unions protecting lazy employees. It happens in some non union environments to though..

Actually, there’s more details on this article…

There are a lot of misconceptions on this. Yes, unions these days in many types of industries are sketchy, but as an employee of this company (surprise), all we ask for is better working conditions and better pay. Working conditions as it is now are already a given (it is a service industry after all), but getting yelled at by customers and supervisors for almost no reason at all, to the point where things get very personal, are some things that needs to be solved. Also, the fact that workers these days are getting the impression that they’re “lazy” is really not that true at all, at least with this company. That’s not really the clear picture, since there are actually a shortage of staff in almost every Superstore and Extra Foods. Yes, it means more hours for the employees, but that does not mean the amount of service is being provided to the customers is at full force.
There are many other factors and reasons why things aren’t so clear cut with Superstore and Extra Foods these days, most of which has nothing to do with this union members and the new contract, and has to do with everything with Loblaw/Westfair themselves, which they have their own problems to deal with (distro centres, quality control, etc).
I hope this clears some things up.

I used to work at Superstore myself, McPhillips location (going out on a limb here saying that’s it’s one of– if not THE– most busiest Superstores in Winnipeg). The people I worked with were really friendly.. but it’s true, management could use a lot of work. Often straight faced people who would only talk and converse among other ‘higher ups’. friends among themselves, but everyone below them were like dirt.. seems like they don’t realize that they can’t keep a company running without the lower workers. oh well, i’m glad i’m outta there. Christmas time was too nuts for me..
