Final Fantasy XIII Imminent – Let’s Reflect

Written By Lyndon | 1 Comment

It’s so cliché to call the latest installment of any series the “most anticipated release” as every new installment of a successful series will always be overly anticipated. So I won’t call Final Fantasy XIII that. Instead, let’s forget for a moment that XIII launches tommorow (or tonight at midnight for anyone hitting up local EBGames and Gamestops). Instead, let’s focus on the times of Final Fantasy yesteryear. So jump that jump.

Top 10 Winter Sports Babes

Written By Ken | No Comments

Winnipeg’s very own Shannon Rempel has made it on The Sun’s Top 10 List of Winter Sports Babes. The Sun, which should not be confused with The Winnipeg Sun, is a UK-based tabloid. US-based Maxim magazine did a similar feature for the summer Olympics in Beijing.

Shannon Rempel was born and raised in Winnipeg but now, like many other Winnipegers, currently resides in Calgary. Shannon is at her second Olympics appearance in Vancouver competing in the 500m, 1000m, and 1500m speed skating competitions. She won a silver medal in the team pursuit event at the 2006 Winter Games.

Winnipegers can watch Shannon in her first race of the 2010 Olympics on Tuesday, February 16 at 3:00pm. It will be Race 1 of 2 for the Women’s 500m speed skate.

Is Winnipeg a Smart City?

Written By Trevor | No Comments

I came across a website that, while not Winnipeg-specific, could help raise some ideas that are much needed within the city’s boundaries, so to speak.

It talks about a Smart City. The ideal Smart City whereas the best and smartest aspects of cities from around the world are all placed in one city. This site encapsulates the ideals that it is possible to have “the perfect city”.

Is it possible to have a safe city? Or possibly a crime-free city? Using cameras that can recognize a person using facial recognition to see who they are despite a disguise being worn or if that person is dangerous. Or by using a central system that can alert police, fire or ambulance departments depending on what the 911 call is about and where the call originated from.

And then there’s traffic. Is rapid transit a solution or is it just adding to the problem of crowded streets? Should the city spend the resources they’ve promised over the years on synchronizing the lights? I stopped at 7 lights on my way to work which is typically a 12 minute commute if I catch the right lights making it almost 20 minutes! How much gas did I waste a those lights?

Take a look around on the site (it’s fun with lots of videos) but still takes a look at what’s needed for a city to become smart and efficient and let us know, what would you do to make Winnipeg a Smarter City?

Facebook Gets a Facelift – Again

Written By Ken | 1 Comment

Just after everyone stop complaining about Facebook’s new design, the biggest social networking site in the world has decided to shake things up again.

As usual, everyone will complain about the new design. Remember back in 2008 when everyone cried and whined about the initial Facebook redesign? I can’t even count the amount of group invites I got for “People against the new Facebook”.

The people at Facebook aren’t millionaires for no reason. They know what they’re doing, and though change and new technology is scary, eventually you’ll learn and love it like you loved the last design. Change is good. Without change we’d still be on Friendster/MySpace/GeoCities/AsianAvenue.

Learn more about the new design by logging into your Facebook Account or reading http://www.facebook.com/sitetour/homepage.php.

While you’re there, make sure to add us as friend.

Local Ska Band in SuperBowl Commercial

Written By Trevor | No Comments

This Sunday, Winnipeg’s own Ska band “The Afterbeat” will have national exposure due to Bud’s decision to put them in a SuperBowl commercial.

The best news? It will be only be viewable on Canadian feeds (ok, so not the greatest news for the band but exposure is exposure, right?).

Well done guys! Now, check out one of their videos below and then their MySpace page.
