Police Chopper to Hit Winnipeg Skies in 2011

Written By Ken | No Comments

The province has approved plans for a Police Helicopter to hit the Winnipeg skies in 2011.

Though it won’t be as cool fatal as the infamous Modern Warfare 2 Chopper Gunner, it will have similar aspects such as a thermal vision camera and a huge light beam for Hollywood style police chases.

Theatrics aside, this will definitely make Winnipeg streets a lot safer.

Is Winnipeg a Smart City?

Written By Trevor | No Comments

I came across a website that, while not Winnipeg-specific, could help raise some ideas that are much needed within the city’s boundaries, so to speak.

It talks about a Smart City. The ideal Smart City whereas the best and smartest aspects of cities from around the world are all placed in one city. This site encapsulates the ideals that it is possible to have “the perfect city”.

Is it possible to have a safe city? Or possibly a crime-free city? Using cameras that can recognize a person using facial recognition to see who they are despite a disguise being worn or if that person is dangerous. Or by using a central system that can alert police, fire or ambulance departments depending on what the 911 call is about and where the call originated from.

And then there’s traffic. Is rapid transit a solution or is it just adding to the problem of crowded streets? Should the city spend the resources they’ve promised over the years on synchronizing the lights? I stopped at 7 lights on my way to work which is typically a 12 minute commute if I catch the right lights making it almost 20 minutes! How much gas did I waste a those lights?

Take a look around on the site (it’s fun with lots of videos) but still takes a look at what’s needed for a city to become smart and efficient and let us know, what would you do to make Winnipeg a Smarter City?

New Driver Safety Rating System

Written By Trevor | No Comments

Manitoba’s new Driver Safety Rating System will become effective March 1st with all driver’s being under the system by March of next year.

The new system will have 32 active levels and if you get the highest (25%) discount on your insurance now, you will keep that discount when you move to level 10 on the new system. However, in the next few years you will have the opportunity to earn an extra 5% (to the maximum 30%).

Nude Aiport Scanners Coming to Winnipeg

Written By Ken | 3 Comments

Winnipeg’s James Richardson Airport is one of eight Canadian airports to get naked photos of all Winnipegers new x-rated security scanners. These scanners use millimeter wave technology and will allow airport security officials to see through your cloths as you walk by.

I have a feeling that the airport is going to see an increase in job applications. Better safe than sorry I guess. Heck, it beats a full hands-on body search. Above is an example of how the images will look like. The system will automatically blur your face to provide a small sense of privacy.

How It Works:
There is no radiation involved. It sends extremely high frequency (millimeter wave) radio frequency bands around your body that goes through cloths and creates a 3D image of what it finds.

How Do You Feel About the New Security Scanners?

  • It's an invasion of my privacy! (70%, 109 Votes)
  • I think its a great idea. (30%, 46 Votes)

Total Voters: 155

Another Quiet Sunday… Or Was It?

Written By Lyndon | Comments Off

While Sundays are probably quiet and uneventful for most of us, Winnipeg Police saw a little bit of action. You could even call it eventful.

Two incidents this weekend were kept under control thanks to our Tactical Support team. It’s a case where “no news is good news” as no shots were fired in either cases and no one was hurt. Hearing this stuff happening so close to home, you really don’t want to have this kind of stuff happen. Both were weapons related calls, the first in East Kildonan and the other on Manitoba Avenue.

Turns out no weapons were found at the East Kildonan home while one firearm was found at the Manitoba Avenue incident.

Debit Card Scam in Winnipeg

Written By Trevor | 1 Comment

The Winnipeg Police Service Commercial Crime Unit is currently investigation a debit card skimming operation at a number of businesses throughout Winnipeg.

The initial investigation has revealed that pin-pads were compromised by the suspects and information belonging to persons paying for their purchases using the pin-pads was collected. The information has since been used by the suspects to conduct a number of fraudulent transactions in Eastern Canada.

It’s tricky to get information about what stores are affected as this can seriously hinder business, however one store that was hit was already trying to make up for it. In fact, we posted about them unknowingly earlier today. Who was it? Hit the jump to see as well as the rest of the police notice.

Soccer Player Stomps Neck, Receives Yellow Card…

Written By MikeG | 2 Comments

Heard about this story from a friend and found the CBC article about it fairly quickly. The long and the short of it is that during an outdoor game a player became angry because he thought he was fouled, so he stomped his opponent’s head and neck while he lay on the ground. Scott Keast, the victim of the assault, has been unable to work since the incident on July 13th, and also still has trouble swallowing and speaking. The attack, which has now seen the player officially charged with assault and awaiting an October court date, only earned him a YELLOW card at the time. For anyone not up on the rules, that means for a brazenly open attack that could have left Scott Keast in even worse shape than he ended up in, the player wasn’t even ejected from the game.

This brings up two problems. People might expect, based on my history of going after “the man” that the biggest bone I have to pick would be with the MSA and what must have been some terrible reffing. Actually though what gets me about stories like these is the fact that someone asked this guy to play for their team. What the hell? This is why people have a low opinion of soccer and guess what my fellow players, we are doing it to ourselves. I’ve put together a lot of teams, I’ve never been so short of guys I think to myself “Well, I’ll ask Phil, sure he’s got a little anger problem that tends to escalate to neck stomping, but a player is a player…”. Don’t ask assholes to play with you. That is all.

Winnipeg Police Getting a Helicopter?

Written By Ken | Comments Off

Nothing is official yet, but all the stars seem to be aligning for the Winnipeg Police Service to get its first Helicopter.

The Police Chopper is expected to cost around $2 million and have an annual operating cost of $600,000. If everything continues to go well, we should have it in the airs of Winnipeg by Summer 2010.

The Police Helicopter will provide the WPS a safer and quicker way to move throughout the city. It is equipped with an infrared camera which can track criminals on the run.

The best part? Yes, the big shiny spot light the helicopter will have. It’s going to be just like the movies!
