Winnipeg Roads Getting a Facelift this Year

Written By Ken | No Comments

The province will be putting in $38.1M this year to repair major roads, residential streets, and bike paths.

Winnipeg roads are constantly being hammered everyday (especially truck routes), so its nice to see the province putting a big investment into their maintenance.

$25M of the $38.1M budget will go towards major streets including Chief Peguis Trail, Jubilee Overpass, Sturgeon Road Bridge and Pembina Highway underpass. A $500,000 bike path will also be created along Pembina Highway.

The downside to all of this? Expect even more traffic delays!

Manitoba Introducing New Area Code in 2012: 431

Written By Ken | No Comments

In a few years, you’ll literally be able to your best Ludacris impression and say you got pros in different area codes.

Starting November 3, 2012, Manitoba will have a new 431 area code along with the current 204 code. This also means that you can no longer dial 7 digits to call up your homeboys… you’ll now have to use a 10 digit dialing system IE 204-555-1234 for hommie 1, and 431-555-1234 for hommie 2.

Manitoba joins B.C., Alberta, and Ontario who have already switched over to ten-digit dialing. The change is governed by the CRTC who state that we will run out of 204 numbers by 2013.

Dates To Remember
- July 29, 2012: The 10-digit dialing requirement begins. If you forget to dial 204 before the phone number, you will still be connected but get a recorded message reminding you to do so.
- October 20, 2012: Calls will no longer be connected if you don’t dial 204.
- November 3, 2012: First batch of 431 numbers hit the air.

What Does This Mean to You?
- We live in a age of speed dial, but some of you may store number on your cellphone without a 204 prefix. If so, your speed dial buttons will no longer work in 2012. To prepare yourself, change your address book to now include the 204 prefix on numbers. When adding new contacts, add them with the 204 prefix.
- If you have business cards, email signatures, signage, etc etc… you’ll have to make sure that they all have the ’204′ prefix on them or your customers/friends/bar hookups wont be able to contact you.
- Check any alarms/call forwarding system/automated dialers that may call a 7 digit number. This will also need to be updated to 10 digit calling.

Forever 21 and BCBGMAXAZRIA Opening in Polo Park Shopping Centre

Written By Ken | 1 Comment

Women of Winnipeg have been waiting for this for a long time, but it’s finally official. Forever 21 and BCBGMAXAZRIA will both be opening their first Winnipeg locations side-by-side in Polo Park Shopping Centre. They will be taking over the massive 40,000-square-foot space Safeway used to occupy.

Both stores bring something for all generations. Forever 21 will bring fashion for the younger Winnipeg women, where BCBG will bring fashions for the mature classier types.

Either way, look forward to the women of Winnipeg looking even more beautiful than they already are.

This will be Canada’s 30th BCBG store, and 11th Forever 21 store. Construction has already begun and both stores are expected to open January 2011.

Cold Stone Creamery Opens Its First Winnipeg Location

Written By Ken | 1 Comment

Cold Stone Creamery, an American-based ice cream parlour chain, has opened its first Winnipeg location (half location). It is located at 2500 Main St. and attached to Tim Horton’s. Both stores are located in one building and is a co-branded store.

All ice cream creations are offered in three fancy named sizes: “Like It” (5 oz (140 g)), “Love It” (8 oz (230 g)), and “Gotta Have It” (12 oz (340 g)) – and I thought tall, grande, and venti was hard.

I haven’t had a chance to try their Ice Cream yet, but I’d imagine it is very similar to Marble Slab. Make sure to join their Birthday Club for a free Ice Cream on your birthday.

Thanks for the tip Gazel

Polar Bear Conservation Centre Opening in Winnipeg

Written By Ken | No Comments

In a few years, photos such as the one taken above of Polar Bears at Churchill, Manitoba, will no longer be possible. Experts predict that Churchill Polar Bears will be extinct in the very near future.

The province of Manitoba is going to do what they can to prevent this from happening. The first step is opening a new Polar Bear Conservation Centre at the Assiniboine Park Zoo. $4.5 million will be used to renovate the current Polar Bear exhibit at the Zoo. It has been empty since Debby the polar bear died in 2008.

The centre will have 6-7 polar bear cubs and will also be a place for research. Most research will be done away from public viewing but the public will get a chance to see them once they are adult bears.

Historic Exchange District to Get Modern Design Stage

Written By Brian | No Comments

The historic Exchange District is getting a state-of-the-art modern design stage.

On June 17th, a new stage is going to be unvieled which features lasers, internactive lights, and a built in sound system. It will cost more than $1 million to build.

A couple of people are complaining that the stage looks “out of place” and “weird” as it doesn’t match the historic design of the district. I say as long as it has LASERS then bring it on!
