Convergys To Layoff 500

Written By Lyndon | 2 Comments

One of Manitoba’s top employers has been going through some rough times and it looks like the clock runs out sometime in March of 2010. The former hiring powerhouse is planning to start the layoffs at the end of this month and will continue to do so until March.

Being a former grunt of the Convergys force, I wish the current employees the best of luck in the future. I’ll never forget the times I spent playing hours of Mario Kart DS with 7 other of my friends while taking calls, or the many late night food runs…. or the time when I saw Oli D. fall asleep during his lunch and didn’t wake him up until 2 hours later…. or this.

This is a sad time for those still employed, but it’s also a time to remember the great non-work related times!

Hydro Strike on the Horizon

Written By Ken | 2 Comments

Hydro workers just moved in to their new downtown building on Tuesday, and it looks like they may be moving back out.

3000 union members rejected the latest contract offer earlier this week. The main problem was salaries and the length of the contract.

A strike would definitely be seen by thousands of Winnipegers going through downtown. If it does happen, it will be the first in the 48-years Hydro has been in businesses.

Customer service will not be disrupted if a strike occurs.

UPDATE: It’s official, Hydro workers will go on strike for the first time ever tonight. Downtown is going to be busy!!

Minimum Wage Going to $9 a Hour

Written By Ken | 1 Comment

A reminder that as announced last year, effective October 1, 2009 minimum wage will be $9/hour.

On May 1, 2009, the minimum wage went up 25 cents to $8.75. This Thursday October 1, 2009, it will go up another 25 cents to $9.00.

Though there will be much backlash from restaurant owners and companies that employ based on the ‘tip’ system, the hike comes with a small business tax cut (in half to 1 percent) that should even out the field.

GM Officially Files for Bankruptcy

Written By Ken | Comments Off

GM Motors officially filed for bankruptcy protection early Monday morning. It will shed its Pontiac, Saturn, Hummer and Saab brands. Many dealerships in Winnipeg have already closed and more may (or may not) be on the block from this announcement. On the plus side… a lot of cars just became collectibles.

Even $19.4 billion dollars from the Federal Government wasn’t enough to get them out of the hole. Current GM owners shouldn’t worry about their warranties as they will continue to be honoured.

GM will use its bankruptcy to shed the plants, dealerships, debt and other liabilities it can no longer afford. A new GM is expected to rise from the ashes that will consist of the four brands that GM will keep in the market: Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC and Buick.

REMINDER: Taxes Due at Midnight Tonight

Written By Ken | Comments Off

Reminder that your 2008 income tax return must be filed by midnight tonight, April 30.

Workers are outside of the Canada Revenue Agency building on Stapon Road in Transcona to allow you to make quick drive-thru style drop offs.

You can also file by mail, phone, or my favorite… e-file.

It is most important for anyone owing taxes as there will be a late penalty charged if you do not file on time.

Anyone affected by the flood has been granted an extension of June 1, 2009 to file their taxes. You must contact the government ahead of time if you are a flood victim and will be filing late.

Apple Store Opening in Winnipeg?!?

Written By Ken | 11 Comments

What’s Ikea?!? It looks like an Apple Store may be on the horizon for Polo Park Shopping Centre!

There has been no official announcement, but a few locals have found some evidence that the electronics super-giant may be opening a store in Winnipeg.

Where’s the proof?
- Click here to view Apple Canada’s job description for an Canadian Apple Specialist
- At the very bottom click ‘FIND LOCATION’
- On the location drop down box select ‘MANITOBA’ and hit ‘FIND’

You are now directed to an area where you can apply for future openings at the ‘Polo Park Shopping Centre’ location.

Of course, this doesn’t mean anything, but Winniepg Apple fans can’t help but get excited about this!

Thanks for the tip gflux!

UPDATE:
Possible confirmation?

Apple will add two additional stores to its Canada line-up this year: a second store in Vancouver, and the first-ever store in Winnipeg (Manitoba). First, Apple will open its first-ever mid-Canada store by opening in the Polo Park mall in Winnipeg, not far from city center. The city has a population of 700,000, about one-half the entire population of the province, making it a major travel destination. Next, Vancouver’s second store will be inside Oakridge Centre, the city’s largest mall, and just four miles south of the existing Pacific Centre store. Both stores could open by this October.

Want to Join the RCMP?

Written By Ken | 1 Comment

The RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) are having a difficult time finding good applicants to join the force. I hope its not due to the ridiculous red outfits they continue to wear after generations.

The RCMP is recruiting 2,000 cadets per year over the next few years to meet increased demands for police services across the country.

RCMP applicants must have Canadian citizenship, be 19 years or older (may begin the application process at 18), be of good character, proficient in English or French and have a high school diploma or equivalent. Candidates must also possess a valid Canadian driver’s license and meet medical/health standards.

Horse riding is not a requirement.

Head to the RCMP Employment Page for more information.
