FRIDAY EATS: Aloe Vera Juice

Written By Ken | No Comments

This weeks Friday Eats is a feature on another dietary product that is taking Winnipeg by storm.

Aloe Vera, also known as the medicinal aloe, is a species of succulent plant that originated in Northern Africa, the Canary islands and Cape Verde. Aloe Vera grows in arid climates and is widely distributed in Africa and other arid areas. The species is frequently cited as being used in herbal medicine. Many scientific studies of the use of Aloe Vera have been undertaken, some of them conflicting. Despite these limitations, there is some preliminary evidence that Aloe Vera extracts may be useful in the treatment of wound and burn healing, diabetes and elevated blood lipids in humans. These positive effects are thought to be due to the presence of compounds such as polysaccharides, mannans, anthraquinones and lectins.

Aloe Vera juice is a drink that’s made from crushed Aloe Vera. It has natural detoxifying benefits and natural support for the immune system.

It soothes and cleanse your digestive tract and improves circulation. Everyone knows how healthy Aloe Vera is when it is applied externally on your skin, just imagine how healthy it can be for your body internally when it is consumed.

The drink comes in a variety of different tasty & healthy flavours: natural, sugar-free, pomegranate, mango, lychee, keewee, pineapple, peach, guava & grape.

To try out various different brands and flavours of Aloe Vera Juice head to your local Young’s Market.

FRIDAY EATS: Kawaii Crepe

Written By ErinDeBooy | 2 Comments

When I was little, my mom would make crepes almost every Sunday morning. I’d smother them in butter and brown sugar and after about 3 or 4 of them, I’d be bouncing off the walls for the rest of the day. Over time I was introduced to nutella, which I’d smother over my crepes with bananas or strawberries and felt as if I had been born again.

Kawaii Crepes makes me feel as if I’ve died and gone to crepe heaven. They offer their crepes in two categories, sweet and savory. The sweet menu offers tons of sugary creations that I wish I would have thought of when I was a kid, and the savory menu offers a wide variety of lunch crepes that have opened my eyes to a crepes full potential.

FRIDAY EATS: Shirataki Noodles aka The Miracle Noodle

Written By Ken | No Comments

This weeks Friday Eats will be a bit different. Instead of featuring a Winnipeg restaurant we are featuring a food item that is taking Winnipeg and the world by storm. It is called the Shirataki Noodle or The Miracle Noodle.

Our friends at Young’s Market gave us a rundown of this very popular dietary food item:

This amazing high fibre weight-loss product originated in japan. Its made from soluble plant fibre, which gives dieters 3 advantages.

1) once digested, it expands slightly and gives you a sense of fullness;
2) it has no calories;
3) you don’t need to cook it;

Cooking Suggestions:
All you have to do is drain away the water content and pour your favourite sauce over it and serve. Or consume it like many Asians do, in hot-pot!

This product is great to use as a substitute meal since it gives you a sensation that you ate something hearty. This is why it is known as the “miracle noodles.”

Shirataki Noodles aka The Miracle Noodle is available now at both Young’s Trading (397 William Ave.) and Young’s Market (1000 McPhillips St.)

Make sure to check out their website at youngsmarket.ca for more great recipes and food tips.

Top 5 MPI Frauds of 2009

Written By Ken | No Comments

Manitoba Public Insurance has released a list of the top 5 frauds for 2009 that are pretty hilarious. If you ever thought that you could get away with insurance fraud, think again. About 3,000 suspicious claims were meticulously reviewed by Manitoba Public Insurance’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) in 2009. The SIU recovered undeserved benefits and denied fraudulent claims totalling nearly $30 million over the last three years.

Top Christmas Gifts of All Time

Written By Ken | 1 Comment

Esquire published this awesome article about the Top Christmas Gifts of ALL TIME by year. You probably wont be surprised with the results, but hopefully some of these will spark your mind and give you some great ideas for gifts this year.

Here is my take on the list…

2009: eBook Readers (Amazon/Others)
To those technically challenged, an eBook Reader (Amazon Kindle, Nook eReader) is digital paper. For example, you download the newest Harry Potter book onto the eBook Reader and you get to read it digitally on this thin device. Instead of turning the page, you hit next on the device. Whats the difference between it and a computer? Battery life and portability. These things are very thin and require little to no power. It’s just starting to hit the Canadian market now, so I’m not too sure if this will be a 2009 seller in Canada.

Is it still good today? Yes. If you have someone in your life who is a big book junkie, then this is the item to buy.

2008: Elmo Live (Fisher Price)
These little cuddly things actually made a friend of mine a lot of money last year. Fisher Price never expected the demand for these and produce such low quantities that parents were paying over 3x it’s value on eBay and various other classified sites.

Is it still good today? Yes/No. The Elmo was definitely the product of 2008. However, as soon as Fisher Price caught on – the mass produced and now a zombie of Elmo’s have taken over North America and are steadily available at all retailers. If your looking to buy as something ’special’ and an ‘exclusive’ – don’t expect it from the Elmo.

2007: iTouch (Apple)
When Apple announced the iPhone, everyone went crazy – but didn’t necessarily want to sign a 3-year contract with Rogers to get it. So the announcement of the iTouch was the next best thing.

Is it still good today? Yes. Since 2007, Apple has released new versions of the iTouch that now has a speaker and various other new features. The iTouch has also transformed into a very popular gaming device. This device can do it all and is perfect for anyone who loves gadgets.
