IMPRESSIONS: Step Up 3D

Written By Ken | 3 Comments

Special thanks to Paramount Pictures for inviting us and a few lucky Access Winnipeg readers to the advanced screening of Step Up 3D last night. Though the movie had a predictable story line, it very well lived up the word 3D in it’s title. Hand’s down the best 3D effects I’ve ever seen… yes, better than Avatar!

You’ll notice that there is no 2D version of this movie. This is becuase the movie is all about the 3D effects and is not meant to be seen in a 2D version (ie. Don’t bittorrent this movie, it’s not worth it)

Here is my mini review:
- Acting = it’s on and off. The good dancers were weak actors, and the good actors were weak dancers
- Story Line = very cheesy and predictable. But if you’re into that stuff then you’ll probably be crying by the end of the movie. It’s tons of fun, but only if you’re willing to accept the fact that the dancing and 3D are the main focus of the movie, not the story line/acting.
- Soundtrack = great music. Worth the purchase
- Dancing = amazing. Great choreography and well place videography. A lot of moves are fresh and things that you probably haven’t seen yet. Something from all dance genres. Waltz, tap, hiphop, etc etc. My favourite scene has to be the Moose + Camille dance scene
- Rick Malambri = the girls will love him
- Sharni Vinson = hot!!
- Adam G. Sevani = why isn’t this dude a household name yet? He’s an amazing dancer and a great actor.
- 3D = the greatest 3D effects movie out there right now. If you thought Avatar’s 3D was great… wait till you see this movie

Conclusion:
- 3D Junkies: Even if you may not be a dance fan, this movie is STILL for you. It does 3D perfect. If you ever wanted to see the amazing things a 3D movie can achieve, then don’t hesitate to watch this movie
- Winnipeg Dance Crews: I expect ALL of you to watch this movie. It will simply blow your mind away

Step Up 3D hits theatres Friday, August 6, 2010.

VIDEO: Drake Live in Winnipeg (Complete Concert)

Written By Ken | No Comments

IMPRESSIONS: If you’re a regular Access Winnipeg reader, then you know that I am a huge Drake fan. In a world where the USA has dominated the music scene… it’s a great feeling to know that two of the biggest names in the music world right now are Canadian. Justin Bieber and Drake have taken the world by storm. Pair them up with the Vancouver 2010 Olympics and suddenly Canada is no longer a huge land mass taking up half of North America.

Though Drake’s debut album proved that he is a very talented artist, the concert proved that he still has a lot of work to do as a performer. But before I go on, I should explain a few things about HipHop shows. HipHop concerts/shows are very difficult to put on from an artists perspective. ROCK shows can fill their stage with pyrotechnics, balloon devils, 20 minute guitar solos, and huge marquess signs. POP artists can have background singers, background dancers, and even a little acting in between.

IMPRESSIONS: Bon Jovi: The Circle Tour in Winnipeg

Written By Trevor | 2 Comments

I was at the concert on Saturday. In fact, I was one of what looked like 40,000 strong. Some were Bon Jovi fans. Some were Kid Rock fans. Do I remember every song that was played? Probably not. Do I remember anything? I’ve got bits and pieces put together. What I do remember is this. Everyone was there to have a good time.

Hit the jump to read more and see the rest of the videos I took. Keep coming back over the next week as there are a few more to go up. YouTube is just taking its sweet time processing the videos. Oh, and if you hear a drunk trying to sing along, it was the guy beside me … honest.

IMPRESSIONS: Eminem – Recovery

Written By vinnydisilvio | No Comments

If you just plain hate Eminem, there’s nothing I can do for you. But this album could be the best hip hop album of the last 10 years.

There are some who don’t hate Eminem, but they’ve been hating on him since The Eminem Show (maybe before). They claimed he gradually abandoned the style of rapping
that they loved. Some have loved him the whole time. This album contains a lot for both of those groups, and just about everyone in between.

Right from the opening track, Eminem comes at listeners full force, with everything he’s got. He really doesn’t let up much after that. Until the very end of the album he’s got the fire that everyone remembers and loves.

I’m not even sure I can pick out a stand-out track, or even a few of them. There’s too many good songs here. Whether you’re listening to “Won’t Back Down”, “No Love”, or his 1st single off the album, “Not Afraid”, Eminem takes down and kills anything else out there right now. And for those of you who miss songs like “Stan” where Em’s fire is backed up by an amazing hook sung by a female with a beautiful voice…there’s plenty of that here too. Songs like “25 to life” or “Love the Way You Lie” cannot be compared to anything else that’s been done. How about songs where the hook is sung by rockers, like “Dream On” with the Aerosmith sample? Got some of that too, with the hook on “Going Through Changes” being an Ozzy Osbourne sample. Actually, this song reminds me a lot of the early Eminem days, shortly after he signed to Aftermath.

Other great tracks include “Cinderella Man” and “Almost Famous”. And, if you pick up the Deluxe copy of the album you’ll hear one of the greatest group tracks of all time. “Session One” with newly signed Shady records artists, supergroup Slaughterhouse. Not only is this a great album musically, it’s also probably the most honest and vulnerable hip hop album released in a while. I’m not sure I can remember another hip hop album where a rapper confesses he almost started beefs with other rappers strictly because he was jealous of their success. I just don’t think it happens.

I’m sorry…I cannot hate a single song on this album. I can’t even be indifferent about any of them. It’s true, I was one of those who has always felt that Eminem was one of the greatest in the game, even when people were hating on Relapse and complaining about that great Encore album. But, that doesn’t mean I loved every track on Relapse. That album was just ok, with only a few really good tracks. But this…no one will beat this for a long time. Even the album sales say something about the quality of this album. Given that it sold 750,000 copies in its first week it could be in the running to be the best selling album of the year, hip hop or not.

So whether you long for the old Eminem or have loved him the whole time…or you were even indifferent about him the whole time…if you love hip hop you WILL find a lot to dig on this album. Guaranteed.

IMPRESSIONS: 4Play Sports Bar & Entertainment Zone

Written By Ken | No Comments

I had the opportunity to enjoy a very thrilling NBA Finals Game 7 last week at 4Play Sports Bar. A handful of friends and I were seated first row in front of the 24-foot HD projection screen. The experience brought us to one conclusion: That every major sporting event should be watched at 4Play.

That atmosphere wasn’t like anything I have experienced before. You could tell that everyone in the building was a basketball fan. Though the crowd slightly favoured the Lakers, there were plenty of Celtics fans jawing whenever Kobe had the ball. Both crowds were so loud that it felt that we were actually in the Los Angeles Staples Centre watching Derek Fisher nail the game deciding 3-point shot live. After every made basket, fans from each team would jump out of their seats, hit some high fives, and cheer from the top of their lungs (yes, I lost my voice by the end of the night). Whenever the Celtics had the ball, chants of DEFENSE would fill the room. At first I had thought that it was coming from the sound system, but was surprised to find out that it was actually fans in the building doing the chanting.

4Play had hired a DJ for the night who would play themed tracks during commercial breaks. Lakers tie up the game after trailing by 13? He would rip out Dr. Dre – California Love during commercial break! This made the experience even more exciting… slow speech-based commercials never slowed down the excitement of the night. The music kept everyone on the edge of their seats and ready for the next segment of basketball.

Our waitress was amazing. My group arrived separately and were running various tabs, but our waitress was on top of it all and had the bills perfectly split at the end of the night. She also knew that it wasn’t a good time to ask for drink/food orders during the game. She would always come around during a dead ball, time-out, or commercial break. This was a HUGE winner for me and really added to the in-game experience.

Service was prompt, we had pitchers coming minutes after we ordered them. I also gave their ‘famous’ poutine a try and it definitely lived up to it’s name. The theatre seats came with a removable table that you can snap on to the chair and place food/drinks on. These theatre seats are the most comfortable place you can watch a game outside of your own home.

When the game ended, and Kobe ran out the dying seconds of the 2010 NBA Finals, the DJ dropped Drake – Over. Yes, the game was over. And as a Boston fan who gloated for the first 3 quarters, so was my dignity. But for some reason I couldn’t stay down on my defeat. I looked around me to hear music was pounding, people jumping up and down hugging each other, strangers from across the room with matching Kobe jerseys exchanging high fives… I couldn’t help but smile. It then dawned on me that this is what Winnipeg sports fans had needed for a long time. A place where many fans of similar interests can get together, and enjoy a sporting event in a large venue with countless amounts of high definition television sets. There was a never a moment in the night where I didn’t have a full view of a TV screen. Anywhere I turned, they had a television set playing the game. 4Play Sports Bar is definitely the ultimate experience for any sports fan, and EVERY major sporting event not taking place in Winnipeg should be watched there.

I just wished we had this place during the Canada/USA Olympic Gold Medal match. It would have been epic.

Top 10 Foods At The Red River Ex

Written By Brian | 1 Comment

The Red River Ex happens once a year for just under 2 weeks. During this time, it is pretty much routine that everyone come to the Ex at least once. There are tons of things to do at the Ex which include playing games for prizes, going on rides, and much more. While doing that, people tend to get hungry, but don’t worry the Ex has tons of food to try that you can’t get anywhere else in Winnipeg. Sometimes it can be tough to decide what to eat, which is why we have tried some of the food there and have provided a count down of the top 10 foods at the Red River Ex.

This was really tough to decide, and alot of food to eat, so I had 2 other friends to help out. So thanks to Ron and Mark for taking pictures, helping with the logo, and also eating the food, while it was pouring rain outside. We decided to try the food and rank them on our own. I then averaged the rankings to determine the Top 10. So here goes…

Beverages: Original and Cherry Lemonade

The drinks that we had to wash down all the food was lemonade. There were plenty of lemonade stands at the ex. This was probably the best and most fresh lemonade I have ever had. It had the perfect blend of sweetness and lemon flavour that quenched my thirst perfectly. They even stick a whole lemon inside to provide an authentic lemon flavour as well as provide amazing presentation.

The lemonade goes for $3.75 and can be found all across the Ex.

IMPRESSIONS: MTS Centre – Doors Open Winnipeg

Written By Trevor | Comments Off

This past weekend was ‘Doors Open Winnipeg’. For those not familiar with the concept, it was an opportunity to take short (sometimes guided) tours of some of the most interesting buildings around Winnipeg.

My brother and I head over to a downtown Tim’s (oddly enough not on the tour) and then tried out a couple. We first headed over to the MB Hydro building on Portage Avenue. Unfortunately, there was a limit of 25 people per tour and it booked up fast (note to self for next year – CALL AHEAD). The other place I wanted to check out was the MTS Centre. I wanted to see the parts that you typically don’t see at a regular Moose game.

FRIDAY EATS: Winnipeg Chicken Wings

Written By Gazel | 7 Comments

Chicken wings are the perfect get-together food when you want to watch that game at the sports bar. The only three places in Winnipeg I’ve been for chicken wings are Players, Dylan O’Connors and Smitty’s.

Player’s wings I find are the best out of the three restaurants. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays you can get wings for 0.25$, and for the other days, 0.39$ which isn’t a bad deal. They’re usually crispy and warm and come nicely coated with sauce. Lately though, I’ve been finding the size of the wings a tad minuscule. There’s a variety of sauces and they make a really mean “death” sauce. In order to get the wings that price you have to order a drink and not just water. I’d say it’s not the best restaurant ever—but it’s cheap. The ambiance is a bit intimidating for some but I’ve seen people bring their children there. The service is alright compared to other restaurants, but on the occasion I’ve been there they’ve been kind of rude. I also have to note a minimum of 12 wings must be ordered for wing nights.
