FRIDAY EATS: Aloe Vera Juice

Written By Ken | No Comments

This weeks Friday Eats is a feature on another dietary product that is taking Winnipeg by storm.

Aloe Vera, also known as the medicinal aloe, is a species of succulent plant that originated in Northern Africa, the Canary islands and Cape Verde. Aloe Vera grows in arid climates and is widely distributed in Africa and other arid areas. The species is frequently cited as being used in herbal medicine. Many scientific studies of the use of Aloe Vera have been undertaken, some of them conflicting. Despite these limitations, there is some preliminary evidence that Aloe Vera extracts may be useful in the treatment of wound and burn healing, diabetes and elevated blood lipids in humans. These positive effects are thought to be due to the presence of compounds such as polysaccharides, mannans, anthraquinones and lectins.

Aloe Vera juice is a drink that’s made from crushed Aloe Vera. It has natural detoxifying benefits and natural support for the immune system.

It soothes and cleanse your digestive tract and improves circulation. Everyone knows how healthy Aloe Vera is when it is applied externally on your skin, just imagine how healthy it can be for your body internally when it is consumed.

The drink comes in a variety of different tasty & healthy flavours: natural, sugar-free, pomegranate, mango, lychee, keewee, pineapple, peach, guava & grape.

To try out various different brands and flavours of Aloe Vera Juice head to your local Young’s Market.

Roll Up the Rim to Win

Written By Ken | No Comments

Everyone’s favourite game is back. Tim Horton’s Rrroll Up the Rim to Lose Win promotion starts today (March 1, 2010).

This years grand prizes are 40 Toyota Rav4’s (Recall free I hope), 100 $10,000 cash prizes, and 1,000 Toshiba Netbooks (A grand prize is a Netbook?!? Really?!? Aren’t those things like $300?)

They also have the regular food and gift card prizes. As you can tell, I’m a bit disappointed with this years prizes, a more reason to get FREE coffee at McDonalds instead!

Good luck!

FRIDAY EATS: Shirataki Noodles aka The Miracle Noodle

Written By Ken | No Comments

This weeks Friday Eats will be a bit different. Instead of featuring a Winnipeg restaurant we are featuring a food item that is taking Winnipeg and the world by storm. It is called the Shirataki Noodle or The Miracle Noodle.

Our friends at Young’s Market gave us a rundown of this very popular dietary food item:

This amazing high fibre weight-loss product originated in japan. Its made from soluble plant fibre, which gives dieters 3 advantages.

1) once digested, it expands slightly and gives you a sense of fullness;
2) it has no calories;
3) you don’t need to cook it;

Cooking Suggestions:
All you have to do is drain away the water content and pour your favourite sauce over it and serve. Or consume it like many Asians do, in hot-pot!

This product is great to use as a substitute meal since it gives you a sensation that you ate something hearty. This is why it is known as the “miracle noodles.”

Shirataki Noodles aka The Miracle Noodle is available now at both Young’s Trading (397 William Ave.) and Young’s Market (1000 McPhillips St.)

Make sure to check out their website at youngsmarket.ca for more great recipes and food tips.
