FRIDAY EATS: Aloe Vera Juice

Written By Ken | No Comments

This weeks Friday Eats is a feature on another dietary product that is taking Winnipeg by storm.

Aloe Vera, also known as the medicinal aloe, is a species of succulent plant that originated in Northern Africa, the Canary islands and Cape Verde. Aloe Vera grows in arid climates and is widely distributed in Africa and other arid areas. The species is frequently cited as being used in herbal medicine. Many scientific studies of the use of Aloe Vera have been undertaken, some of them conflicting. Despite these limitations, there is some preliminary evidence that Aloe Vera extracts may be useful in the treatment of wound and burn healing, diabetes and elevated blood lipids in humans. These positive effects are thought to be due to the presence of compounds such as polysaccharides, mannans, anthraquinones and lectins.

Aloe Vera juice is a drink that’s made from crushed Aloe Vera. It has natural detoxifying benefits and natural support for the immune system.

It soothes and cleanse your digestive tract and improves circulation. Everyone knows how healthy Aloe Vera is when it is applied externally on your skin, just imagine how healthy it can be for your body internally when it is consumed.

The drink comes in a variety of different tasty & healthy flavours: natural, sugar-free, pomegranate, mango, lychee, keewee, pineapple, peach, guava & grape.

To try out various different brands and flavours of Aloe Vera Juice head to your local Young’s Market.

FRIDAY EATS: Kawaii Crepe

Written By ErinDeBooy | 2 Comments

When I was little, my mom would make crepes almost every Sunday morning. I’d smother them in butter and brown sugar and after about 3 or 4 of them, I’d be bouncing off the walls for the rest of the day. Over time I was introduced to nutella, which I’d smother over my crepes with bananas or strawberries and felt as if I had been born again.

Kawaii Crepes makes me feel as if I’ve died and gone to crepe heaven. They offer their crepes in two categories, sweet and savory. The sweet menu offers tons of sugary creations that I wish I would have thought of when I was a kid, and the savory menu offers a wide variety of lunch crepes that have opened my eyes to a crepes full potential.

FRIDAY EATS: Shirataki Noodles aka The Miracle Noodle

Written By Ken | No Comments

This weeks Friday Eats will be a bit different. Instead of featuring a Winnipeg restaurant we are featuring a food item that is taking Winnipeg and the world by storm. It is called the Shirataki Noodle or The Miracle Noodle.

Our friends at Young’s Market gave us a rundown of this very popular dietary food item:

This amazing high fibre weight-loss product originated in japan. Its made from soluble plant fibre, which gives dieters 3 advantages.

1) once digested, it expands slightly and gives you a sense of fullness;
2) it has no calories;
3) you don’t need to cook it;

Cooking Suggestions:
All you have to do is drain away the water content and pour your favourite sauce over it and serve. Or consume it like many Asians do, in hot-pot!

This product is great to use as a substitute meal since it gives you a sensation that you ate something hearty. This is why it is known as the “miracle noodles.”

Shirataki Noodles aka The Miracle Noodle is available now at both Young’s Trading (397 William Ave.) and Young’s Market (1000 McPhillips St.)

Make sure to check out their website at youngsmarket.ca for more great recipes and food tips.

FRIDAY EATS: Sushi Gen

Written By Gazel | No Comments

After a long hiatus from writing on my blog, and for AccessWinnipeg, I am back! Welcome to December’s first edition of “Friday Eats”, this is Gazel with a new review and a new restaurant review, at that.

Firstly, expect more reviews for restaurants. Due to school and work schedules, I was relatively busy—but enough about that, let’s get straight to the food.

FRIDAY EATS: Phuong Nam Restaurant

Written By Gazel | 5 Comments

Every time someone asks me where the best pho is in Winnipeg, I always tell them the same place. This place is Phuong Nam Restaurant along William Avenue. I’ve been to the Philippines, Hong Kong, Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, etc… and every bowl of pho I’ve sampled could not even compare to Phuong Nam restaurant. My palette tries really hard to find a place that serves a better bowl of Vietnamese noodles, but it is always defeated and comes back to Phuong Nam. When I want to take my friends somewhere new, I take them here—and they fall in love as ardently as I do with the noodles. Whether I want to take my parents out for dinner, I know they won’t hesitate to come here.

FRIDAY EATS: Pancake House

Written By Gazel | 5 Comments

They say this restaurant is a Winnipeg icon; they say that most people have been here once, if residing in Winnipeg. I guess it took me 18 years for me until I actually got to visit this place. Let me tell you, I was intrigued, because every time I passed Pembina Highway, I would wonder how it was there. Being Asian, my parents are really biased against white food—especially my father, who would not even let me go near a “white restaurant”. It was at the wake of my parent’s divorce is when I finally got to taste “white food”. One of the restaurants my mom took me to was Pancake House near Polo Park.

FRIDAY EATS: Winnipeg’s AYCE Sushi Restaurants

Written By Gazel | 7 Comments

Hello again, this is Gazel from J’adore la Bouffe and this week I am writing about all-you-can-eat (AYCE) sushi restaurants in Winnipeg.  This particular post will be highlighting the only three AYCE restaurants, to make up for my lack-of-update last two weeks.

I love sushi. I go at least a few times a month to my favourite sushi establishments. Unfortunately, I am merely a student and cannot always afford as much trips as I like to my favourite sushi places. However, if you feel like stuffing yourself with sushi, and want quantity more than quality, an AYCE place may be good for you. Unlike other places in Canada, Winnipeg is only has Miso, Mooshiro and Magic Sushi and Wok.

First of all, I would like to emphasize: do not go to an all-you-can-eat restaurant expecting 3 star Michelin quality. IT WILL NOT HAPPEN. People go to these places to gorge themselves for a slightly lower price and not really care—so sushi snobs, you have been warned!

I recommend when you go to an AYCE place, you bring many friends with you because going by yourself—you will get stuffed easily and won’t get to sample as much as you want.

FRIDAY EATS: No Eul Tor

Written By Gazel | 6 Comments

Hello, AccessWinnipeg! My name is Gazel and I will be doing a brief restaurant review on restaurants around Winnipeg. I will try to suit everyone’s tastes from quick and tasty, low budget and fine dining. This first review is featuring one of my personal favourite restaurants No Eul Tor. It’s a restaurant name that people might not be able to remember; but it is the only Korean restaurant in the Sargent area. It now resides where former Filipino restaurant, Pasalubong used to be.

Winnipeg is such a diverse city. It is a melting pot of immigrants, and Koreans are no exception. There are lots of Koreans in Winnipeg, but very few actual Korean restaurants that actually serve traditional Korean food (meaning, no sushi!). This place was one of the first Korean restaurants I’ve been to, and it’s certainly one of my favourites for quick and cheap Korean meal.
