FRIDAY EATS: Winnipeg Chicken Wings

Written By Gazel | 7 Comments

Chicken wings are the perfect get-together food when you want to watch that game at the sports bar. The only three places in Winnipeg I’ve been for chicken wings are Players, Dylan O’Connors and Smitty’s.

Player’s wings I find are the best out of the three restaurants. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays you can get wings for 0.25$, and for the other days, 0.39$ which isn’t a bad deal. They’re usually crispy and warm and come nicely coated with sauce. Lately though, I’ve been finding the size of the wings a tad minuscule. There’s a variety of sauces and they make a really mean “death” sauce. In order to get the wings that price you have to order a drink and not just water. I’d say it’s not the best restaurant ever—but it’s cheap. The ambiance is a bit intimidating for some but I’ve seen people bring their children there. The service is alright compared to other restaurants, but on the occasion I’ve been there they’ve been kind of rude. I also have to note a minimum of 12 wings must be ordered for wing nights.

FRIDAY EATS: Maxime Restaurant

Written By Gazel | 1 Comment

Today’s entry of Friday Eats is to showcase one fine restaurant that a lot of us may have overlooked. I know a lot of people who have! Whenever we drive by St. Mary’s road we always pass by Maxime Restaurant, a place that looks like an ordinary run-of-the-mill restaurant. We took a chance and my friends and I decided to dine-in.

Were we in for a surprise once I we entered the restaurant! I do not have any pictures for proof, however, see for yourself. You will be surprised when you see a beautifully decorated restaurant adorned with stained glass appliques on the wall and Greek-influenced statues. Classical music plays in the background and it seems like one of those restaurants that you needed a reservation to dine in. Fortunately for us, we did not require a reservation. Unfortunately, we were dressed far too casually for this restaurant.

FRIDAY EATS: Manila Mangoes

Written By Ken | 1 Comment

There are over 2500 types of mangoes, but commercially we consume around only around 200 types. The mango is high in antioxidants, potassium, has over 20 essential vitamins and minerals, and it’s rich in fibre.

The Ataulfo mango, a.k.a “the Manila Mango” is one of the best tasting types of mangoes, being that it has a small flat pit, with its flesh being fibrous free rich, and sweet. This fruit can be found in Mexico, where they’re called supreme mangoes “Mangoes de Manila.” It can be found in the Philippines cultivated in the region of Cebu, where it’s the national symbol of the country. The season is usually between March & September, however the summer months will yield the sweetest fruit.

Choosing the Fruit:
Pick one that’s bright golden yellow, blemish & wrinkle free. When its unripe, it’s green, and it’s quite sour to taste. Like a banana, it turns yellow & sweet when ripe.
Overly ripen mangoes will start to soften and blemish, it is best to use them in a smoothie.

How to Eat the Fruit:
Only the flesh of the mango is consumed. The mango can be eaten fresh ripe, dried, puree, used as a topping on ice cream; or even blended into a smoothie. In Thailand it is served as a dessert sliced and laid over a bed of glutinous rice flavoured with coconut milk. In Taiwan it is laid over a bed of ice drizzled with condensed milk.

FRIDAY EATS: Pizza Pizza Takes Over Winnipeg Silver City Locations

Written By Ken | Comments Off

While attending the screening of The Last Song last night, it was to my disappointment to discover that Silver City Polo Park no longer has New York Fries and Pizza Hut in their lobby.

The New York Fries has been replaced with Outtakes/Pizza Pizza which offer a wide arrangement of foods for movie goers. Instead of individual sized pizzas that Pizza Hut sold, Pizza Pizza offers them by the slice. They too offer Fries – but everyone knows that nothing can beat NYF.

I have nothing against Pizza Pizza, but when it comes to top level fries/pizza, NYF and Pizza Hut were the perfect one two punch. Having them as separate locations also minimized lineups… the line up as Pizza Pizza yesterday was ridiculous!

The old Pizza Hut area was completely removed and now contain a stand for napkins and straws making the lobby a bit more roomy than before.

According to our friends on facebook and twitter, Silver City Polo Park isn’t the only one to suffer the Pizza Hut/NYF fatality… St. Vital has also made a similar change.

FRIDAY EATS: Aloe Vera Juice

Written By Ken | Comments Off

This weeks Friday Eats is a feature on another dietary product that is taking Winnipeg by storm.

Aloe Vera, also known as the medicinal aloe, is a species of succulent plant that originated in Northern Africa, the Canary islands and Cape Verde. Aloe Vera grows in arid climates and is widely distributed in Africa and other arid areas. The species is frequently cited as being used in herbal medicine. Many scientific studies of the use of Aloe Vera have been undertaken, some of them conflicting. Despite these limitations, there is some preliminary evidence that Aloe Vera extracts may be useful in the treatment of wound and burn healing, diabetes and elevated blood lipids in humans. These positive effects are thought to be due to the presence of compounds such as polysaccharides, mannans, anthraquinones and lectins.

Aloe Vera juice is a drink that’s made from crushed Aloe Vera. It has natural detoxifying benefits and natural support for the immune system.

It soothes and cleanse your digestive tract and improves circulation. Everyone knows how healthy Aloe Vera is when it is applied externally on your skin, just imagine how healthy it can be for your body internally when it is consumed.

The drink comes in a variety of different tasty & healthy flavours: natural, sugar-free, pomegranate, mango, lychee, keewee, pineapple, peach, guava & grape.

To try out various different brands and flavours of Aloe Vera Juice head to your local Young’s Market.

FRIDAY EATS: Kawaii Crepe

Written By ErinDeBooy | 2 Comments

When I was little, my mom would make crepes almost every Sunday morning. I’d smother them in butter and brown sugar and after about 3 or 4 of them, I’d be bouncing off the walls for the rest of the day. Over time I was introduced to nutella, which I’d smother over my crepes with bananas or strawberries and felt as if I had been born again.

Kawaii Crepes makes me feel as if I’ve died and gone to crepe heaven. They offer their crepes in two categories, sweet and savory. The sweet menu offers tons of sugary creations that I wish I would have thought of when I was a kid, and the savory menu offers a wide variety of lunch crepes that have opened my eyes to a crepes full potential.

FRIDAY EATS: Shirataki Noodles aka The Miracle Noodle

Written By Ken | Comments Off

This weeks Friday Eats will be a bit different. Instead of featuring a Winnipeg restaurant we are featuring a food item that is taking Winnipeg and the world by storm. It is called the Shirataki Noodle or The Miracle Noodle.

Our friends at Young’s Market gave us a rundown of this very popular dietary food item:

This amazing high fibre weight-loss product originated in japan. Its made from soluble plant fibre, which gives dieters 3 advantages.

1) once digested, it expands slightly and gives you a sense of fullness;
2) it has no calories;
3) you don’t need to cook it;

Cooking Suggestions:
All you have to do is drain away the water content and pour your favourite sauce over it and serve. Or consume it like many Asians do, in hot-pot!

This product is great to use as a substitute meal since it gives you a sensation that you ate something hearty. This is why it is known as the “miracle noodles.”

Shirataki Noodles aka The Miracle Noodle is available now at both Young’s Trading (397 William Ave.) and Young’s Market (1000 McPhillips St.)

Make sure to check out their website at youngsmarket.ca for more great recipes and food tips.
