Terry Fox Entering the Winnipeg Hall of Fame

Written By Ken | No Comments

Nearly 30 years after his death, Terry Fox has finally joined the Winnipeg Citizens Hall of Fame.

Terry Fox was a Canadian humanitarian, athlete, and cancer research activist. In 1980, with one leg having been amputated, he embarked on a cross-Canada run to raise money and awareness for cancer research. Though the spread of his cancer forced him to end his quest after 143 days and 5,373 kilometres (3,339 mi), and ultimately cost him his life, his determination and example created a lasting, worldwide legacy. The annual Terry Fox Run, first held in 1981, has grown to involve millions of participants in over 60 countries and is now the world’s largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research; over C$500 million has been raised in his name.

Terry Fox joins other notable Winnipeggers including former mayor Stephen Juba, media magnate and philanthropist Israel Asper, suffragette Nellie McClung, artist Leo Mol, author Carol Shields and Winnipeg Jets founder Ben Hatskin.

DavidsTea Opening in Winnipeg

Written By Stacey | Comments Off

Last spring I took a trip to Montreal. Knowing that I am a tea fanatic, a friend of mine let me know about a tea store there – DavidsTea.

After about 15 minutes in this store I was having an orgasm. Seriously.

No really I wasn’t but even to this day – I fantasize about it.

Well soon enough, DavidsTea will be available in Winnipeg. They will be opening up a store in Polo Park and they have started their hiring with this add on kijiji.

DavidsTea offers the finest selection of tea’s I’ve ever seen. The quality is excellent. They have new menu’s every season and keep the most popular items in their permanent menu. Not only do they sell loose tea, they also allow you sit down and enjoy any of the tea’s they have in stock – either hot or cold. The company only started in 2008, it’s been expanding at a rapid pace.

If you still need to be sold on tea, check out this page about the benefits of tea!

You can start browsing now on their website.

FRIDAY EATS: Aloe Vera Juice

Written By Ken | Comments Off

This weeks Friday Eats is a feature on another dietary product that is taking Winnipeg by storm.

Aloe Vera, also known as the medicinal aloe, is a species of succulent plant that originated in Northern Africa, the Canary islands and Cape Verde. Aloe Vera grows in arid climates and is widely distributed in Africa and other arid areas. The species is frequently cited as being used in herbal medicine. Many scientific studies of the use of Aloe Vera have been undertaken, some of them conflicting. Despite these limitations, there is some preliminary evidence that Aloe Vera extracts may be useful in the treatment of wound and burn healing, diabetes and elevated blood lipids in humans. These positive effects are thought to be due to the presence of compounds such as polysaccharides, mannans, anthraquinones and lectins.

Aloe Vera juice is a drink that’s made from crushed Aloe Vera. It has natural detoxifying benefits and natural support for the immune system.

It soothes and cleanse your digestive tract and improves circulation. Everyone knows how healthy Aloe Vera is when it is applied externally on your skin, just imagine how healthy it can be for your body internally when it is consumed.

The drink comes in a variety of different tasty & healthy flavours: natural, sugar-free, pomegranate, mango, lychee, keewee, pineapple, peach, guava & grape.

To try out various different brands and flavours of Aloe Vera Juice head to your local Young’s Market.
