New Driver Safety Rating System

Written By Trevor | No Comments

Manitoba’s new Driver Safety Rating System will become effective March 1st with all driver’s being under the system by March of next year.

The new system will have 32 active levels and if you get the highest (25%) discount on your insurance now, you will keep that discount when you move to level 10 on the new system. However, in the next few years you will have the opportunity to earn an extra 5% (to the maximum 30%).

Smart Set Closing in Portage Place

Written By Stacey | 1 Comment

It’s the death of another retail vendor in downtown. Smart Set at Portage Place will be closing up shop on January 27th.

Yes they are having a sale. No it’s not anything different than any other location. They don’t have any new merchandise in the store.

This announcement came out just before released the New Retail Strategy outlining what Winnipeg should do regarding retail in the core.

A consulting firm – which is deemed a leader in North American downtown development strategies, concluded that downtown should really focus on “cheap-chic” fashion stores. Well I mean other than Sirens, I really thought Smart Set met that description.

The continuous closure of stores downtown makes it very frustrating for a person who lives and works downtown and doesn’t have a vehicle. I thought I could make it without a car, with the lack of car share, the high cost of short distance transit or all day transit hopping and our downtown missing some key necessities,  I had to finally cave in.

In my opinion I think that if we stopped begging retailers to come downtown and focus more on why no one wants to come downtown regardless of retail opportunities, then maybe the stores will come on their own. Why would I know anything though – let’s pay people who live in big house in the suburbs to tell us what we need!

I wonder what will be taking Smart Set’s spot? Maybe Esprit? Sigh, a girl can dream.

A Great Year for Downtown

Written By Stacey | No Comments

Winnipeg Downtown Biz released a nice list of positive changes for downtown that occurred in 2009. Since I live downtown I’m always happy to hear of the things being planned and worked on. What I am surprised about is how many of these items i haven’t heard about.  Now we are on the biz’s media release list we’ll be more informed. I’m very happy to see that Ciclovia managed to bring 10,000 people downtown to support active transportation especially with what seemed to be last minute advertising. Maybe we’ll see a car share soon?

Here is the full list.

Another Quiet Sunday… Or Was It?

Written By Lyndon | Comments Off

While Sundays are probably quiet and uneventful for most of us, Winnipeg Police saw a little bit of action. You could even call it eventful.

Two incidents this weekend were kept under control thanks to our Tactical Support team. It’s a case where “no news is good news” as no shots were fired in either cases and no one was hurt. Hearing this stuff happening so close to home, you really don’t want to have this kind of stuff happen. Both were weapons related calls, the first in East Kildonan and the other on Manitoba Avenue.

Turns out no weapons were found at the East Kildonan home while one firearm was found at the Manitoba Avenue incident.

Party Buses Pulled Over Again

Written By MikeG | Comments Off

Two party buses and a limo were taken off the road last night for failing to pass inspections. I expected this to be more of an issue at the start of the summer when police had a massive crackdown on party buses that saw over a dozen safety and liquor infraction fines handed out. Personally I’m on the side of the bus operators and I think the whole thing reeks of shakedown on the part of police and MLCC.

Last night’s inspections saw two open liquor fines handed for 1,200$ each, imagine how much they minted in fines for that first round of busts. But drinking has always been the entire purpose of these buses and for years I don’t recall hearing about any efforts made to enforce the liquor laws on them. If police and MLCC were really out to insure a minimum standard of safety on the buses wouldn’t working with the proprietors be more effective than spontaneous crackdowns every couple months? We can all agree that buses should have working breaks and exits or whatever else constitutes a full safety inspection. But when it comes to the liquor these laws need to be changed.  Everyone is doing it and its so hard to find a morally objectionably issue to pick at, please tell me what is wrong/dangerous about drinking on a party bus?   At this point I think its fair for us to ask whether everyone is breaking the law or the law itself is broken.

Mike Kelly Putting an End to Call-Ins on Radio Show

Written By MikeG | Comments Off

In an effort to put avoid having this degenerate into the usual hate fest that Bomber related posts inspire, I decided to use this happy picture rather than a more fitting picture of Bomber coach Mike Kelly glowering away. At this point if you are a Bomber fan you probably already heard about Mike Kelly refusing on air calls for the Bomber radio show. I almost didn’t mention this today because it doesn’t mean that much to me and I wasn’t kidding with my first sentence, Bomber posts seem to get people fired up. But in the spirit of creating some dialogue, which I’m all about, there it is. And here we go.

Not that I think its too deep or ground breaking a sentiment, but it really is a shame when a few people ruin it for everyone. I agree with Mike Kelly’s decision, since CJOB and the Bomber organization obviously wouldn’t allow Kelly to fire back with everything he wants to say to obnoxious callers, why should he have to sit there and endure frivolous and pointless abuse? I just think its ridiculous that this so called “vocal minority” is still referred as “fans” by some media outlets covering this story. Fans enjoy the game and having a team to get behind so that following the league is more of an emotional investment. Fans don’t come out with “what have you done for us lately” or “you should all be fired” after every loss then scream “Bombers are #1!” when they make a playoff run. Those are the people who have made it a wise choice to remove the call ins from the show, and are more appropriately referred to as “bandwagon jumpers” or “idiots”. Its a shame the Sun and other news sources don’t refer to them as such because I’m sure the real fans don’t appreciate being lumped in with them.
