Boathouse Opening at St. Vital Centre

Written By Ken | No Comments

Winnipeg will be getting its first ever Boathouse location at St. Vital Centre. Boathouse is a unisex clothing store that caters to the surf, skate and snowboarding lifestyle. They carry all the major skater brands including Quiksilver, Roxy, Billabong, Volcom, DC, 555 Soul and many more.

The grand opening is this weekend (February 26, 2010). It’s buried within the slow area of St. Vital Centre (just outside of Sears) so make sure not to miss it.

REMINDER: Wal-Mart No Plastic Day

Written By Ken | No Comments

A reminder that today Wal-mart’s No Plastic Day. Every Wal-mart in Winnipeg will not provide plastic bags at check-out. It’s a one day only thing but hopefully a step towards going bagless permanently.

Wal-mart will also be giving out free reusable bags to the first 300 people in each store. I always love when huge corporations make moves to go green and hope that more follow soon.

Thanks for the tip Al!

Bath & Body Works Coming to Winnipeg

Written By Ken | No Comments

The American mega-store Bath & Body Works that specializes in lotions, bath items, personal care items, and home fragrances (and is also every female in my life’s favourite store) is coming to Winnipeg.

Construction will begin at St. Vital Centre this February and expected to complete sometime in March.
Bath & Body opened its first Canadian stores in July 2008. After acquiring Canadian-based La Senza, they saw an opportunity to move into the Canadian market since their only competition would be The Body Shop.

Currently, the closest Bath & Body Works is south of the border at Grand Forks. There are 31 locations in Canada, but the St. Vital Centre location will be the first in Manitoba/Winnipeg.

Smart Set Closing in Portage Place

Written By Stacey | 1 Comment

It’s the death of another retail vendor in downtown. Smart Set at Portage Place will be closing up shop on January 27th.

Yes they are having a sale. No it’s not anything different than any other location. They don’t have any new merchandise in the store.

This announcement came out just before released the New Retail Strategy outlining what Winnipeg should do regarding retail in the core.

A consulting firm – which is deemed a leader in North American downtown development strategies, concluded that downtown should really focus on “cheap-chic” fashion stores. Well I mean other than Sirens, I really thought Smart Set met that description.

The continuous closure of stores downtown makes it very frustrating for a person who lives and works downtown and doesn’t have a vehicle. I thought I could make it without a car, with the lack of car share, the high cost of short distance transit or all day transit hopping and our downtown missing some key necessities,  I had to finally cave in.

In my opinion I think that if we stopped begging retailers to come downtown and focus more on why no one wants to come downtown regardless of retail opportunities, then maybe the stores will come on their own. Why would I know anything though – let’s pay people who live in big house in the suburbs to tell us what we need!

I wonder what will be taking Smart Set’s spot? Maybe Esprit? Sigh, a girl can dream.

Walmart St. Vital Gets a Facelift

Written By Ken | 3 Comments

Walmart St. Vital is rocking a new store front that matches their U.S. chains. They are branding with a more modern asterix (*) logo instead of the old yellow star/happy face.

Construction for this went be pretty quick, I didn’t even notice it going up. I’m sure that all other Walmart’s will follow very soon (if not already)

I like it!

McNally Robinson Polo Park Closed

Written By Ken | 3 Comments

McNally Robinson’s Polo Park Winnipeg location permanently closed its doors on Sunday January 3, 2010.

This was very shocking news as it seems that the location had just opened and Polo Park had done some extensive renovations to its exterior for this store (which used to be housed by Sport Chek)

The Grant Park location continues to remain open.

The Winnipeg location wasn’t the only one to get the axe, the location at the Shops at Don Mills in Toronto was also closed.

McNally Robinson filled for bankruptcy protection late December. The struggling economy and stagnant book prices made it difficult for the company to stay a float.

There is now a very large void in the heart of Polo Park Shopping Centre. What shop do you want to see occupy the space?
