Apple Fall 2010 Product Line Overview

Written By Ken | 2 Comments

Apple dropped the jaws of people around the world again today with another amazing product line.

I’m most excited about the new iPod touches with facetime… It’s going to be awesome to facetime with people without an iPhone!

iOS 4.1 and iOS 4.2
Steve Jobs revealed that iOS 4.1 will be available for the iPhone and iPod next week, and iOS 4.2 for iPad will be available in November. This is great news for iPad owners such as myself. Finally the iPad will catch with all the awesome multitasking/folders features that the iPhone iOS4 has.

iOS 4.1 brings Gamecenter (Apples version of XBOX Live) as well as HDR Photography. You’ll also now be able to upload HD video to YouTube over WiFi.

iPod Shuffle
The iPod Shuffle now has buttons again. It is the same size as the last gen shuffle, but now with the familiar buttons. The price is also amazing. A 2GB shuffle will run you $59!

iPod Nano
The iPod Nano looks awesome!! It runs a mini version of iOS with a touch screen and does almost everything an iPod Touch does! Think of it as a mini version of an iPod touch.

It has voice controls as well as a built-in FM radio. It also sports the same clip on the back so you can still wear it wherever you go.

The regular colours are available. 8GB $159. 16GB $189.

iPod Touch
The iPod Touch has now been updated to have everything an iPhone 4 has except the phone. It will have the same HD Retina Display as well as a front facing and back camera.

The camera can be used to do facetime calls over wifi. Facetime calls on an iPod Touch are triggered via email address.

8GB $249. 32GB $319. 64GB $429.

Apple TV
It doesn’t look like Apple was able to license the name iTV so they will stick to the Apple TV name. Apple TV got a big refresh today. It now has an all black matte finish and its 4 times smaller than the original Apple TV. It is comparable to a hockey puck. The new Apple TV will be 100% HD and have TV rentals for only $.99. It will have internal storage and can also play video/photos/audio over wifi. Apple also slashed the price making it only $119.

MTS Refunds On The Way

Written By Ken | No Comments

The CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission) has ordered Canada’s largest phone companies, including MTS, to give back MTS Allstream, to give back $310-million to urban home telephone customers.

The credits will appear on your bill within the next few months and will range from $25 – $90 per customer.

The credit comes from millions of dollars that were charged to customers in effort to increase industry competition. The CRTC has ruled that that money should go back to the customers.

MTS will now also expend their Broadband Internet access to sixteen remote communities in Manitoba. Within the next 4 years, the following communities will now have high-speed Internet access available through MTS:

- Cooks Creek Poplar Point
- Cranberry Portage Rockwood
- Dallas Roseau River
- Falcon River Sandy Bay
- Lee River Sprucewoods
- Lynn Lake St. Eustache
- Nelson House Sunset Bay
- Oswald Woodridge

Rogers and Fido Testing HSPA+ in Manitoba

Written By Ken | No Comments

Rogers and Fido has begun testing their HSPA+ (High Speed Packet Access) network in Manitoba.

The 21Mbps HSPA+ network will be the fastest in Canada. Rogers 3G is up to 7.2Mbps.

You’ll now be to enjoy faster data access on the go! HTC G2 and Rocket Sticks never looked any better.

What is HSPA+?
HSPA+ is not 4G. HSPA+ falls somewhere in between 3G and 4G. Eventually Rogers will achieve 4G or LTE, but at this time HSPA+ is more like 3.75G.

Will I Notice A Speed Increase on my Phone?
Chances are, no, you wont. HSPA+ is very new technology. Chances are that your phone will only support a maximum 3G network. But expect more and more phones to start supporting the HSPA+ and 4G networks soon. The iPhone 4 currently doesn’t support HSPA+.

Rogers is currently testing HSPA+ in Northern Manitoba… Fido has already begun it’s roll out.

Telus to Start Charging for Paper Billing in September

Written By Ken | No Comments

Starting September 21, 2010, Telus Mobility will start charging it’s customers $2 for monthly paper billing. This is in effort to reduce paper waste and to push customers towards e.bill.

E.bill is when customers are emailed their monthly bill instead of receiving a paper statement. Unfortunately, e.bill is an opt-in feature, if you do not change to online billing by September 21, your account will start getting the automatic $2.00 charge.

New Telus Customers
Upon activating your contract, make sure to select e.bill as an option. Failure to do so will result in a $2 charge a month for paper billing.

Existing Telus Customers
Call customer support to change to e.bill by September 21, 2010.

Fido was the first to introduce a fee for paper billing and it looks like all the major carriers will eventually follow. No news yet on when Rogers will introduce the fees.

I think its a great idea. When I had paper billing it often went straight into the trash. Online billing has been wonderful for me. I get all the detail I would get in a paper bill, without the environmental waste.

E-Waste Fees May Be Coming to Manitoba

Written By Ken | 1 Comment

To all my gizmo and gadget junkie friends out there… we may have to start paying more than just the 12% tax for our delicious addictions.

Manitoba is considering introducing a E-Waste Fee on electronics purchases that will go towards the recycling of those products later on.

Rates would fluctuate depending on the size of the product. A small cellphone could potential have a 10 cent fee attached to it, where a larger 50″ LCD TV will have a $20 fee attached to it.

I agree that this fee would definitely help the environment, but I really don’t think having it as a ‘fee’ or a ‘tax’ that shows up at check-out is the way to go. A better idea would be to have these fees charged to retailers and have them added on top of product prices.

I don’t mind the 10 cents levy charges every now and then for pop.. but if theres a $10 E-Waste fee for every iPhone/iPad/iMac/iToy Apple comes out with, then it will definitely add up.

VIDEO: iPhone 4 ‘Death Grip’ Exists in Canada

Written By Ken | 3 Comments

Everyone has been making a big deal of the iPhone 4 Death Grip. The Death Grip is when you hold your iPhone 4 a certain way that causes severe antenna loss.

Unfortunately, the problem does exist in Winnipeg as demonstrated in the video above. However… I noticed that even though my phone was reporting signal loss with the grip, I could still make clear phone calls with it. Also, this was only happening in weak-signal environments such as a basement. Though my basement started off with 5 bars, it quickly demolished to 0 bars after 1 minute of the death grip.

In a stronger signaled environment, the bars only dropped to 3 with the death grip.

So if you haven’t taken advantage of Apple’s FREE case offer, you should right away. I ordered mine on July 30, 2010 and my case isn’t schedule to ship until September. Head to Apples Website for instructions on how to obtain your free case, it only took me a few seconds to order one.

For iPhone 4 purchases made before July 23, 2010, you must apply no later than August 22, 2010; otherwise, you must apply within 30 days of your iPhone 4 purchase. To qualify for this program, you must purchase your iPhone 4 by September 30, 2010.
