Early Morning Traffic Returns

Written By Ken | 1 Comment

If you’re on the road between 7am and 9am then you’ve probably noticed that traffic has increased this week and getting to where you need to be is taking a lot longer.

This is becuase school is back in session at Red River College and University campuses in Winnipeg. Though the traffic seems bad already, this week is probably just a taste of whats to come. The first few days of school usually sees a small attendance, so expect traffic to be even worse as the school season picks up.

Make sure to adjust your alarms to avoid any delays. Most importantly, drive safe! I know that traffic jams can be frustrating times… but if you give yourself enough time in the morning, all frustrations can be avoided.

Winnipeg Roads Getting a Facelift this Year

Written By Ken | No Comments

The province will be putting in $38.1M this year to repair major roads, residential streets, and bike paths.

Winnipeg roads are constantly being hammered everyday (especially truck routes), so its nice to see the province putting a big investment into their maintenance.

$25M of the $38.1M budget will go towards major streets including Chief Peguis Trail, Jubilee Overpass, Sturgeon Road Bridge and Pembina Highway underpass. A $500,000 bike path will also be created along Pembina Highway.

The downside to all of this? Expect even more traffic delays!

VIDEO: First Winnipeggers Being Ticketed for Driving w/ Cellphone

Written By Ken | No Comments

The Winnipeg Sun has published this great video of the first few Winnipeggers being ticketed for driving with a cellphone on their ear.

It appears that Winnipeg Police is not taking any excuses. A simple “I didn’t know it was illegal” will not get you out of it.

As the last dude put it best… Don’t be stupid. $200 for a phone call isn’t worth it.

New Red Light Camera on Erin St. at Sargent Ave.

Written By Ken | No Comments

The city has installed a new Red Light Camera on Erin Street at Sargent Ave. The camera is directly on the one-way Erin St. catching red light and speed violations.

I believe the speed limit is 50km/h, if it isn’t, you should drive 50 anyways just to stay on the safe side.

Winnipeg Transit Mobile Website and Computer App

Written By Brian | No Comments

Winnipeg Transit has opened up their mobile website which allows users to create a trip planner, get bus stop information, find routes, and access maps and fare prices.

The BUSguide website can be accessed by opening your cell phone browser to beta.m.winnipegtransit.com.

The BUSgadget app, which should be available at the Winnipeg Transit website, will show a real time count down of bus departures at certain stops.

This is all possible with the installation of the GPS technology that was installed on busses last September.

Bike to Work Day June 25

Written By Stacey | No Comments

Bike to Work Day will be taking place Friday, June 25, 2010.

This is a great opportunity for all of you who do not bike to work to do so. This year will be the same as last with breakfast for the first 300 people registered at The Forks, along with numerous stations around town where bikers could stop for a refreshment. They have added four “Bike Oasis” location this year where people can meet up and begin there commute together. Cyclist will be shown dedicated active transportation routes and also safety tips when sharing the road with vehicles. If you have any fears about commuting on your bike, this is an awesome place to start.

I did attend last year and it was a pretty awesome event. Since it’s now easier to walk to work than bike, I won’t be partaking in the event, but I will be there doing registration and bike valet.

Check out www.biketoworkdaywinnipeg.org for more information about the event and to register.
