August Long Weekend 2010 Closures

Written By Ken | No Comments

Information About Civic Holiday:
Civic Holiday in Canada. The intent of the Civic Holiday is to “not work”. So please don’t work on Civic Holiday! In Canada Civic Holiday is in most cases the first Monday of August unless another civil or provincial holiday exists on a different date, in which case the local holiday is used.

Civic Holiday in Canada is not statutory holiday. A bill has been attempted to be passed in the house of commons but it has always been unsuccessful. If an employer wants you to work, it is a work day.

What you will often find, however, is that its name Civic Holiday changes from province to province, and even amongst different regions within provinces in Canada. This tells us that Civic Holiday is not as important as some other holidays, but still it is celebrated as a statutory Canadian holiday.

Unlike in Canada, Civic Holiday in United States (US) is called Labor Day.

Happy 143rd Birthday Canada!

Canada Day (French: Fête du Canada), formerly Dominion Day (French: Le Jour de la Confédération), is Canada’s national day, a federal statutory holiday celebrating the anniversary of the July 1, 1867, enactment of the British North America Act (today called the Constitution Act, 1867), which united two British colonies and a province of the British Empire into a single country called Canada.

Winnipeg Not Included in Monopoly: Canada Edition

Written By Ken | 1 Comment

It is with disappointment for me to report that Winnipeg did not make it on to the Monopoly: Canada Edition game board. It would have been great to see what photo they would have used. I’m guessing the Golden Boy.

We were doing pretty good in voting before the blackout period, but it looks like we fell behind. Banff, AB snagged the last spot on the board.

Don’t feel too bad though, larger cities such as Ottawa, Toronto, and Vancouver only made it to the Light Blue area. Boardwalk went to Chatham-Kent, ON.

* Dark Blue: Chatham-Kent, Saint-Jean-Sur-Richelieu
* Green: Calgary, Sarnia, Edmonton
* Yellow: Windsor, Quebec City, Trois-Rivieres
* Red: Medicine Hat, Gatineau, Shawinigan
* Orange: Kawarth Lakes, Chilliwack, Montreal
* Magenta: Kelowna, North Bay, St. John’s
* Light Blue: Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver
* Brown: Beauceville, Banff

Did Winnipeg Make the Monopoly: Canada Edition Game Board?

Written By Ken | No Comments

Hasbro will be releasing the Canada Edition of the worlds most famous Board Game this year. The Canada Edition of Monopoly will have Canadian Cities in replacement of street names.

Fans were asked to vote from January – February 2010 to determine which cities would occupy various spots on the board. 22 cities made the new board and will be featured in order of highest to lowest rented properties based on number of votes. The results will be revealed by Mr. Monopoly himself on June 22, 2010 via live satellite. We’ll provide the video link later this week.

Let’s hope Winnipeg got a great spot on the board!!

Happy Manitoba Day

Written By Ken | Comments Off

Our province turns 140 years old today… Prairie Research conducted a survey in March 2009 and asked 801 Manitobans “When is Manitoba Day?“. Only 29, or less than 4%, knew Manitoba Day is May 12th. The province should really consider stronger marketing for this day so Manitobans everywhere can join in celebration for our wonderful province.

Happy Manitoba Day!

Manitoba Facts:
* Manitoba has an area of 647,797 square kilometres (250,116 sq mi) and a population of 1,213,815 (according to 2009 estimates)
* Manitoba’s largest and capital city, Winnipeg is also Western Canada’s 4th largest CMA, and has Canada’s 7th largest municipality
* The provincial flower is the Prairie Crocus
* The provincial bird is the Great Grey Owl
* The provincial tree is the White Spruce
* Manitoba entered Confederation on July 15, 1870
