2 Chairs at WAG

Columbus Airport Chairs Originally uploaded by libraryman

This is a new exhibition at the Winnipeg Art Gallery that started a couple weeks ago and runs until January 18, 2009.

The thought behind it is simple, or so it seems.

Nine leading furniture designers were asked to design 2 chairs (hence the name). The description from their website goes like this:

Each was approached to design two chairs for this exhibition. One chair was to address the functional nature of the chair, and the second to consider the theoretical role of the chair. Lo and behold, this inquiry led to yet another tangent – was it really necessary to design two chairs? Might it be possible to view one chair as two? A chair which addressed both the functional and conceptual aspects at hand?

OK, that totally just peaked my interest. I’ll be checking this out pronto.

Winnipeg Free Press Strike

Winnipeg Free Press Originally uploaded by zaziepoo

This mornings online version of my favorite newspaper has seemed to miss out on a fairly important story. The Winnipeg Sun claims that a strike at the WFP is “almost a certainty”. Well, if this is the case, I will have to change my morning routine. If only the Winnipeg Sun had an RSS feed.

The current contract expired at midnight September 30th, which was early this morning. There is no anticipated date for the strike to begin and negotiations are underway.

Do Not Call List - Launches Today

8703e Originally uploaded by AccessWinnipeg

Don’t like telemarketers calling you during dinner or while you’re in the shower or sleeping? Well today is your lucky day.

While you’ve always been able to “politely” ask telemarketers to not call you, the government has gone one step further and has passed a law to allow you to put your name (and more importantly your number) on a national list that prevents them from calling.

Telemarketers found in violation of the list could face fines of up to $1,500 for individuals and up to $15,000 for corporations.

Canadians will be able to add their land line, cell or fax numbers on the national do-not-call list online at www.LNNTE-DNCL.gc.ca or by calling 1-866-580-DNCL (3625). For TTY service only (for the hearing impaired), the toll-free number will be 1-888-DNCL-TTY (1-888-362-5889).

*Funny side note - apparently our government doesn’t know what a domain name is*

New Monopoly Board - Sans Winnipeg

New Monopoly Board Originally uploaded by vinduhl

That means the new MONOPOLY Here and Now: The World Edition will be without Winnipeg, however it will have 3 other Canadian cities. Canada is one of 2 countries to have 3 cities on the new board.

Montreal, Toronto (of course) and Vancouver all have spots on the new board when it is released early next week on August 26th.

Check out Monopoly’s website to see where you can buy one.

Winnipegers are Boring

Sleeping On The Bus Originally uploaded by rycordell

I don’t agree with this statement, however some of our fellow Canadians do.

Focus groups across Canada have been questioned on their thoughts on the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, which is slated to open it’s doors in Winnipeg in 2012.

The location of the museum is viewed negatively by French speaking focus groups in Monction, Quebec City and Montreal along with the visible minority focus group held in Montreal. Most common complaints are cold, boring, far and uninteresting.

Other places either were not very concerned about the location or did not raise location as an issue. These places include Vancouver, Calgary, Halifax, Toronto, Kitchener, Thunder Bay, Red Deer and Whitehorse.

Why are the French hating on Winnipeg?? Don’t we have one of the largest french speaking population in Western Canada?

Mosquito Fogging Resumes

Mosquito bite Originally uploaded by James Jordan

Mosquito fogging is resuming tonight, which is great and all, except for the fact they are not doing my area. Why are there so many damn bugs in Osborne? It’s bad. I swear I have west nile.

The city should spray for all bugs, including spiders. That would make my day.

If you live in any one of these areas, make sure your windows are closed tonight.
